Common Public Transportation Barriers People in a Wheelchair Face

People in wheelchairs have limited mobility, but that doesn’t mean that they’re incapable of moving around independently. In fact, if the current structures and establishments are designed to be wheelchair-friendly, people in wheelchairs will be able to do things that those who are walking with their own two legs can do. A fine example of this is traveling from one place to another through public transportation.

Unfortunately, the current public transportation system still needs further improvement to accommodate people in wheelchairs. There are still a lot of barriers for these people, which include the following:

  • Access to public transportation
Access to public transportation is definitely the first major challenge. It is because access to public transportation is limited, thus people with disabilities will have to resort to using specialty services such as NEMT in Louisiana just to get to their destination.
  • Difficulty boarding and disembarking
Not all public vehicles are equipped with mobility ramps like what you would see with Medicaid transportation vehicles. Without the ramps, the person in a wheelchair will find it difficult to board and disembark.
  • Obstacles within public vehicles
Even when the person in a wheelchair can board a public transportation vehicle, the problem now is that there are obstacles within the car too. There may not be enough space to accommodate the wheelchair or that the floor may be too slippery for the wheelchair’s tires.

WE LIFT LLC Wheelchair Rideshare Service aims to make it easier for people to travel from one place to another through proper wheelchair transportation in New Orleans, Louisiana. If you need our services, please don’t hesitate to give us a call.
